History of Greeting Cards
People have been giving and receiving greetings cards for over 200 years. Although, elite community members only, due to their expensive cost, exchanged the first greeting cards, they did have a very personable touch being that they were all hand delivered. As the greeting card industry gained popularity, the cost of the cards went down considerably when the volume of cards increased. By the late 1800's, greeting cards were being sold by the masses and it was the beginning of the biggest and fastest growing market in the world. Not long after mass production of greeting cards evolved the postal system and people where sending cards all over the world.
Many holidays have evolved over the years (of course now each day has a special event); however, the first know holiday cards were exchanged on Valentines Day. And to this day Valentine's Day is the biggest grossing day of the year in the greeting card industry. Not long after came Christmas, Easter, Halloween and Thanksgiving Day cards.
Today greeting cards are an integral part of our culture and slowly society is moving away from traditional paper greetings to electronic greeting cards. As more and more people adapt to the idea of the Internet and in turn become more Internet savvy, more and more people are using the Internet as their main means of communication.
